Mackenzie Hughes is playing in the last group of the U.S. Open today at Torrey Pines and while he got off to a slow start, a few birdies got him back in contention.
Then something terrible happened.
Hughes was two shots back of the leader, Louis Oosthuizen, when he stepped up to the tee box on the par-3 11th hole. He pulled his tee shot way left of the green and the TV cameras struggled for a bit to pick up where the ball landed.
It was hard to find because… it landed in a tree.

Here’s the swing that made that happen:

Hughes had to take a penalty stroke and ended up with a double-bogey five on the hole, which likely has taken him out of contention.
OUCH.
