Actor Lisa McCune takes centre stage in Sue Smith’s new play Macchu Picchu. In 2014, a month before Smith’s Kryptonite was staged in Sydney, she was diagnosed with cancer. Machu Picchu was written as a result, exploring love, loyalty and healing – in a physical and spiritual sense. The story is not autobiographical but is about people, like Smith, whose middle class lives can be disrupted in a moment.
McCune plays Gabby, a woman who has everything she could want: a successful career, a loving husband, a great daughter and good friends. But something is still missing. When an accident leaves her husband paralysed, she has to confront desires that have lain dormant for years. With humour and elegant structure, Smith explores mid-life and long–term relationships. Geordie Brookman directs the play, which also stars Darren Gilshenan, Elena Carepetis and Annabel Matheson.
