Machete-wielding thugs escape with cash after armed raid at Altrincham Sainsbury's

A gang of machete-wielding thugs are being hunted by police following a raid at a supermarket in Trafford .

Three men stormed Sainsbury's on Lloyd Street in Altrincham just before midday on Wednesday.

They threatened staff and demanded cash from the till.

The gang then escaped with the money in a black car down Pownall Road, which police say mounted a kerb and grass verge before heading towards Hale Road.

A cordon was put in place at the store while investigation work was carried out.

It is understood both the travel money counter and cigarette counter were taped off, however it is not clear if they were targeted by the thieves.

A spokesman for GMP confirmed officers were called to the scene at 11.55am.

No arrests have been made and enquiries are ongoing.

A Sainsbury’s spokesperson said: "There was an incident at our Altrincham store and thankfully no one was harmed.

"We’re supporting the police with their investigation."

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 0161 856 7747 or 0161 856 7527, quoting incident number 1208 of September 25.
