A man wielding a machete-style weapon who slashed a man in his 60s as he left a pawn shop remains on the loose.

Detectives are  hunting a suspect  who used the large knife to cause the victim serious injuries to his leg, three days ago.

After the assault, on  Grasmere Street in Anfield,  officers arrested a 23-year-old man near the scene for affray.

Today, police confirmed that person had been released without charge.

The attacker, who  carried out the violence,  is still at large.

Emergency services rushed to the scene at 3pm on Tuesday, just off Breck Road, and discovered the victim who was heavily bleeding in the street.

He was rushed to hospital for treatment.

A man, who witnessed the aftermath of the attack, said: "I was told there that he was attacked with a machete.

"There was quite a lot of blood and apparently he wasn't in a good way.

"He was an older fella, coming out of the pawnbrokers when it happened."

His injuries were described as "non-life-threatening, but the current status of his condition is unknown.

Detectives, who are reviewing nearby CCTV cameras, have asked the public or any potential witnesses to come forward and help their investigation.

The motive for the attack is yet to be established.

Detective Inspector Gavin Mulcahy said: “I would appeal to anyone who was in the area around Grasmere Street or Breck Road in Anfield this afternoon who saw anyone or anything suspicious to contact us as they may have information which is vital to our investigation.

“The investigation is in the early stages and we are trying to get to the bottom of what took place prior to the man being assaulted."
