Machete attack thug jailed for almost two years after permanently disfiguring victim

A thug who attacked another man with a machete has been jailed for nearly two years.

Ryan Canning’s victim suffered a broken wrist as well as wounds to his arm.

Canning, 27, a prisoner, was sentenced at Hamilton Sheriff Court on Friday.

He admitted assaulting Mark McGeechan to his severe injury and permanent disfigurement in Range Street, Motherwell, on August 7.

Rebecca Clark, prosecuting, said the pair had an argument in the street before Canning disappeared into Woodside Tower.

Ms Clark told the court: “He returned with an item held behind his back.

“Canning was shouting and produced what Mr McGeechan described as a machete from behind his back and took it from its sheath.

“He swung the blade, striking Mr McGeechan three times on his left arm.

“Mr McGeechan ran away and sought refuge in a nearby tower block. Police officers attended and the machete was recovered from the home of Canning’s partner.”

Defence agent Stephen MacBride said the attack happened shortly after the second anniversary of the death of Canning’s father.

The solicitor stated: “He and his dad were extremely close.

“Unfortunately, he took to drinking and that perhaps explains why his decision-making on this occasion was not as it should have been.

“He and Mr McGeechan know each other well.

“There had been a long-running feud between them and threats on social media that Mr McGeechan and others would assault my client.”

Canning has a record for crimes of violence, including a High Court conviction.

Sheriff Douglas Brown said the appropriate sentence in the latest case was two and a half years, but he would reduce that to 23 months because of Canning’s early guilty plea.

It was backdated to August 10 as he has been in custody since then.
