Mace notches up higher sales and hails work on Spurs’ ground

Contractor Mace on Tuesday cheered annual sales reaching over £2 billion, and dubbed the new Tottenham Hotspur stadium one of its best-ever projects, despite severe delays.

The construction group’s boss Mark Reynolds, whose firm has previously worked on creating Heathrow terminal 5 and the venues for London 2012, said Tottenham was one of the best jobs he has helped to deliver.

The £1 billion state-of-the-art 62,062-seater ground opened in April, months after it was meant to.

Reynolds said it was a “hugely complex project”. He said there were some supply-chain challenges and Mace “responded in the best way possible”.

Last year the company also worked on completing an office block known as the Can of Ham at 70 St Mary Axe in the Square Mile.

Privately owned Mace recorded a 41% rise in profits to £32.8 million in 2018 and said turnover soared 19% to a record £2.4 billion.

Reynolds cautioned it is difficult to predict how the construction sector will fare over the next 12 months, amid political and economic uncertainty. But he said: “I remain confident that Mace will remain in a strong position.”

The firm is working up construction plans for HS2’s London terminus at Euston. However, the high-speed rail line is under review.
