Macclesfield Town Football Club part company with manager Sol Campbell just weeks into the new season

Macclesfield Town Football Club have parted company with manager Sol Campbell just weeks into the new season.

The former Spurs, Arsenal and England defender was appointed at the Moss Rose just eight months ago.

In a statement, the League Two club praised Campbell for securing league safety last season and said the decision had been 'mutually agreed'.

The club said: "Macclesfield Town can confirm that after eight months with the club and successfully leading us to League Two safety last season, we have mutually agreed to part ways with manager Sol Campbell.

"This has been conducted in the most amicable of ways and there has been total transparency between the club and Sol regarding the challenges which face lower league clubs such as Macclesfield Town.

"We have a very competitive squad in place, as demonstrated by our opening games of the new season and this certainly bodes well for the future.

"Sol's passion, drive and football knowledge will always be remembered at the Moss Rose with fondness."

The club said an announcement over the appointment of a new coach would be made as soon as possible.

Campbell began his career with Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane, where he made 250 appearances between 1992 and 2001 before a move to North London rivals Arsenal in 2001.

He made 195 appearances for the Gunners, during which time he claimed two Premier League winners medals and two FA Cup winners medals - as well as being an integral part of the famous 'Invincibles' side who were undefeated throughout the whole of the 2003/04 Premier League season.

Departing North London in August 2006, he headed down to the south coast to join Portsmouth, where he secured his third FA Cup winners medal two years later.

Campbell, who won 73 caps for England, said in a statement issued by the club: "Macclesfield Town provided me with a great beginning in the managerial side of the game, as well as a fantastic learning curve which I am truly grateful for.

"I would like to thank all the players and staff for their support during my time at the Moss Rose and also all the loyal fans, whose belief at the end of last season ultimately played a tangible role in our success."

The club added: "We will be making a further announcement on the appointment of a new coach as soon as possible.

"Finally, we would like to thank Sol for his time at the club - not only in helping us retain our League Two status, but also for installing a winning mentality which we now hope to build on."

Macc face Northampton Town in the league on Saturday.
