Maccagnan: Jets will look to move into the second round

After not striking a deal to move down in the first round of the 2019 NFL draft, the Jets may have some plans for the later rounds.

The Jets do not own a second-round pick this year due to a trade they made with the Indianapolis Colts last offseason. With the Jets having a few holes to fill, general manager Mike Maccagnan said they “will look” into trading into the second round.

New York does own two third-round picks after acquiring the Saints’ third-round pick for Teddy Bridgewater. They could potentially pair one of those picks with a later round pick in order to get into the second round. There’s also a chance the Jets include linebacker Darron Lee into a package to trade up.

This year’s draft is really deep on the defensive side of the ball, but there’s also some talent on offense too. The Jets still need to dress the offensive line, but specifically the center position. They missed out on the top two free agent centers in Mitch Morse and Matt Paradis. Currently, Jonotthan Harrison is slated in as the starting center.

In addition, the Jets could use a cornerback to go alongside Trumaine Johnson. Darryl Roberts is the second cornerback on the outside right now, but he has yet to prove that’s he’s talented enough to be that high on the depth chart.

They could also add another wide receiver too. The Jets have a lot of good wideouts on the roster right now, but not a true No. 1. In order to help out Sam Darnold, another wide receiver wouldn’t be a bad idea.

Maccagnan’s mid-round picking has been quite shaky over the years, so if he finds a way into the second round, there’s no guarantee he lands an impact player.
