Macaulay Langstaff explains tactics behind latest Notts County strike and shares Sam Slocombe 'joke'

Macaulay Langstaff took his total for the season to 25 goals in Notts County's 2-1 win over Chesterfield on Saturday... and he shows no signs of slowing down in his quest to better Ricky Miller's National League record.

His finish for the Magpies first goal of the evening oozed the quality of a player bang in form as he plucked Sam Slocombe's long ball from over the top with finesse before finishing beyond Ross Fitzsimons.

It was another sensational performance from the National League's top scorer, with his pressing from the front and tireless work rate not going unnoticed as Luke Williams' side hung on for another important three points to extend their unbeaten run to 22 league matches.

Langstaff's finish was something Notts fans have not been accustomed to since Williams' arrival, with Slocombe opting to go long when in possession, which was maybe down to the Spireites joy in closing down the Magpies defence with great success in the opening exchanges.

And the Notts number nine was on hand to detail the tactical aspect behind the passage of play that lead to his goal, expressing his delight at finally providing his goalkeeper with an assist this season.

"It's not necessarily to exploit the space in behind, but it's for the other team to know that we can play that ball and what it does is make them drop deeper," he explained.

"What that then does is allow players like Ruben, Cedwyn, and Jodi those little pockets in midfield. It doesn't always get me in behind, but sometimes it comes off like at Wealdstone and York as well.

"I was glad to get a good touch on it, and me and Sam had a little joke and he said are you going to score one and get me an assist. So I'm glad I managed to get him one today."

Ahead of the fixture with Paul Cook's side, the main talking point was how Notts would adapt to Ruben Rodrigues' absence, with Oxford United loanee Jodi Jones picked to fill the hole left by the Portuguese on his first league start in 1908 days.

And while Langstaff explained he was confident with the members of his squad coming in to take Rodrigues' place, he put particular praise on Jones, who has impressed him since joining last month.

"We know we have that quality, and of course Ruben was going to be a massive miss because he is one of the best players in the league in my opinion.

"But to have a player of Jodi Jones' quality coming in, it's unbelievable to have those options in the squad and you see his qualities with his touch and the way he goes past people.

"We have seen it in training already this week, and we saw it out there on the pitch so if Ruben's out we have quality players to come in and replace him."
