Mac users - any answers?

I'd Ask Jack, but since he's off to Vegas and Comdex, I'll see if any blog readers have the answer: judging by the flashing lights, my Apple Airport and Cable modem appear to be having quite a conversation between themselves even when the computers that normally use them are both switched off. Is there a bit of software out there that lets you see what's going on over the network? I'm running OSX & 9.1. Any answers in the comments box most welcome... I'll report back when I find out more.
