Mac Jones used Lions blowout loss to Buccaneers for film study on handling blitzes

Former Detroit Lions RB coach Kyle Caskey landed an interesting gig following his departure from Detroit. Caskey helped prepare Alabama quarterback Mac Jones for his pro day and budding NFL career.

Caskey sat down with Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press and discussed how he helped Jones get ready. One of the tools was showing him just how ferocious the NFL pass rush can be, and Caskey said he showed Jones the Lions’ blowout loss to the Buccaneers last season as a prime example.

In the interview with Birkett,

“It was a great game to talk about blitz diagnosis and seeing rotations and different things, cause they had every blitz known to man, every different front,” Caskey said. “They just were having fun with us that day.”

The Buccaneers dominated the Lions, 47-7, bagging four sacks and forcing QB Matthew Stafford into several difficult reads due to constant pressure from a variety of looks and angles.

Caskey came away very impressed with Jones and his ability to interpret what he saw from that game.

“And then we kind of went through, I showed him some of the different exercise stuff we did. When I say exercises, we had different things we did with the team that was like, I’d throw this PowerPoint up and the quarterbacks would make their calls, and then the receivers would say what route they’re running, the line would go through what they’re blocking and the calls and the backs would say the same thing. We did a bunch of those and he ran it. It was really good.”

Jones is the presumptive favorite to be the No. 3 overall pick to the San Francisco 49ers.
