Mac Jones explains what he puts into his all-important ‘improvement journal’

Mac Jones carries around a journal, chronicling all his thoughts and feeling. It’s probably not filled with his hopes or dreams. (Though … maybe.) It’s definitely not filled with doodles, Jones confirmed. This notebook is filled with information about football and the New England Patriots quarterback’s career.

The truth is that we’ll probably never know what, exactly is in these notepads he uses.

“Nobody will get their hands on my journal,” Jones said during an appearance on WEEI on Monday.

But it’s clear his writing is one way he gets better as a quarterback.

“My notebook for each week always has one to two pages of the good, bad, and the ugly,” Jones told WEEI. “I’ve done that since I was in Alabama. I’ll write down half a page of what I did well, and two or three pages of things I did bad or ugly, so it’s not like a magical thing.”

He’s watching himself carefully to find the positives and celebrate his sucesses — but, mostly, to point out the areas where he intends to improve.

“I try to watch the take and just whether it’s my feet or a read here or there or should have taken a timeout here or should I have changed this or that? There’s a million things you can go through in your head. It’s more fundamentals for me,” Jones said.

Much is made about Jones’ 4.0 GPA at Alabama and his intense work ethic. And while many players (including former Patriots cornerback Jason McCourty) keep journals like this one, Jones’ notebook is a clear indicator that he’s doing the right things to keep his development and, in turn, New England’s rebuild on track.
