Mac Jones is taking a simple day-by-day approach in the NFL.
There’s high expectations for a quarterback selected with the No. 15 overall pick — especially when landing on the New England Patriots following Tom Brady’s departure. Jones is familiar with high expectations at Alabama and he slowly, methodically lived up the hype and delivered a National Championship.
Cam Newton’s currently out with a hand injury and Jones has been handed the opportunity to prove where he’s at. Instead of getting ahead of himself, Jones is working with an easy approach to improve. He discussed this further with reporters on Thursday following the team’s OTA session.
“You can’t have too high of an expectation and put too much pressure on yourself,” Jones said, transcribed by WEEI. “Like I said, I’m very hard on myself. You have to stack good plays together and keep moving forward. I have to be able to do it faster and be more confident and be louder and that will come with reps.
“So every day I’m just trying to get better and learn from the guys that have already done it and have been through it. So it’s the two buckets – one of them is good, one of them is bad, and you have to improve on the bad and keep the good in the good. That’s pretty much how I’m going about it.”
Jones expanded on the bad bucket and how he’s working with it.
“I think it’s just problem solving,” Jones said. “That’s all life is about. Yeah, you can be mad for a couple minutes. And I’m going to be mad about it, but I have to move on and figure out what works, what I did wrong actually from a schematic standpoint. That’s how every good problem solver works. Yeah, pretty much that’s it.”
The Patriots’ quarterback situation is shaping up much better this offseason compared to last.
