On the same night Jarrett Culver's alma mater scored its biggest regular-season win in the history of Texas Tech, his older brother scored what is believed to be the most points in history by any player from a Texas college.
In what was an eventful evening of basketball in West Texas, Wayland Baptist senior guard J.J. Culver scored 100 points in a 124-60 win against Southwest Adventist on Tuesday night.
Shortly before that, Texas Tech defeated No. 1 Louisville, 70-57, at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
Those familiar with the Culver name know J.J. is a beast, and he's not even the best player in his family.
J.J.'s brother, Jarrett Culver, was the Big 12 Player of the Year last season at Tech. He was the sixth overall pick of the Minnesota Timberwolves in the 2019 NBA draft.
He averages 9.3 points this season, and has scored 212 points in 23 games for the Timberwolves.
J.J. went for 100 in 38 minutes on Tuesday night.
His line: 34 of 62 from the floor, including 12 of 33 from 3-point range. He made 20 of 27 free throws. J.J. Culver also had nine rebounds, two blocks and five steals.
I have no idea how but he also had one assist.
He was hot early, and teammates decided they were feeding Culver all night. Culver scored the first 42 points for WBU, and had 51 at the half.
Jarrett Culver is the better pro prospect because of his height, but J.J. is an NAIA Mamba. He was the conference player of the year last season, and first team All-American.
It appears his 100-point game is the most prolific ever by a player from a Texas college.
After calls to the NCAA, NAIA and National Junior College Athletic Association, we could not find a player from a Texas college who topped Culver's 100-point game.
He was 13 points shy of tying the NAIA scoring record, which was set in 1954 by Clarence Francis of Rio Grande College in Ohio. The NCAA record book also lists Francis' 113-point game a record for the Division II level.
The NCAA Division I record for points in a game is 72 points by Kevin Bradshaw of U.S. International in 1991.
The most points scored in an NCAA Division III game is 138 by Grinnell's Jack Taylor in 2012.
The major National Junior College record is 86 points by Johnell Smith of Santa Fe CC (Fla.) in the 2000-01 season.
