Mabel cancels tour leg over coronavirus fears as Italy struggles to contain virus

Singer Mabel has been forced to cancel the Italy leg of her Europe tour last minute as confirmed coronavirus cases soared to over 200.

The 24-year-old BRIT award winner had been due to play the Magazine Generali in Milan tomorrow night, but called the gig off as the virus rapidly spreads.

The devastated singer took to social media to inform fans of the sad news.

She wrote: “Due to recent events concerning the Coronavirus in Italy, we’ve been advised by the Minister of Health and the President of the Lombardy region not to go ahead with tomorrow’s show in Milan.

“So sad to have to write this, but safety is the absolute priority here!

“Hoping to reschedule soon. Love Mx.”

Mabel is due to continue her tour in Zurich on Wednesday.

Italy has locked down towns, cancelled Venice Carnival events and disinfected boats and gondolas in the lagoon city in a desperate bid to halt a surge in infections.

The number of people infected with coronavirus in Italy soared to over 200 on Monday as a sixth person died.

The victims have so far all been elderly and two had been suffering serious underlying health problems.

Austria is considering imposing border controls with Italy to halt the spread of the virus, and stopped a train entering the county en route to Munich on Sunday evening.

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) now rates the risk of clusters of coronavirus cases occurring in other EU countries as "moderate to high" as the number of infections globally is rapidly approaching 100,000.
