M80 fire: lorry bursts into flames on motorway near Mollinsburn

A lorry earlier burst into flames on the M80 motorway sparking traffic chaos.

Emergency services rushed to the scene on a southbound section of the road at junction 3 near Mollinsburn in North Lanarkshire, the Daily Record reports, leading to the closure of one of the lanes.

Fire crews extinguished the flames on the trailer attached to the HGV and thankfully no injuries have been reported.

The cause of the fire is at this stage unknown.

Police Scotland confirmed their attendance.

A spokesperson told the Record: "We were called at around 9.20am following reports of a vehicle on fire on the M80 at junction three southbound in Lanarkshire.

"A vehicle was on fire in the hard shoulder.

"Fire crews were in attendance."

Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) advised that the vehicle involved was an HGV and that the fire had now been put out, however crews remain on the scene.

A SFRS spokesman told the Record: "We are in attendance at the scene of an HGV fire in its trailer at junction three of the M80 southbound.

"We were called at 9.22am.

"The fire has been extinguished.

"There are no reports of injuries at this time."
