M8 to close as part of eight-week project to upgrade safety barriers and bridges

The M8 will close as part of an eight-week project to upgrade safety barriers and bridges on the route.

The motorway will close at junction three Livingston at various points over the next two months as BEAR Scotland carry out a number of upgrades.

Preparatory works will start on Wednesday (April 14) with the project getting properly underway on the night of Sunday, April 18. Works are expected to continue until the morning of Friday, June 11.

As a result the eastbound on-slip at junction three will be closed from 8.30pm until 6am on the night of Wednesday April 14, with diversions signposted via the A89 to Newbridge.

The same part of the M8 will also close each night – between 8.30pm and 6am – from Thursday, May 20 to Thursday, June 10.

In addition, from Sunday night to Thursday night each week from April 18 to June 11, traffic at the M8 junction three will be down to a single lane in each direction between 8.30pm and 6am. Reduced speed limits will be in place 24-hours a day, seven days a week.

Chris Tracey, BEAR Scotland’s South East Unit Bridges Manager, said: “The existing barriers protecting the supports of the bridges at M8 Junction 3 do not meet current standards. Additional protection is required to ensure that they could withstand a potential impact from a heavy vehicle.

“A great deal of planning has been carried out to minimise the disruption caused while these essential safety upgrades are completed. Speed restrictions are essential for the safety of road workers and motorists, however we’ve planned all works that require lane and slip road closures to take place during night-time hours.

“We thank motorists in advance for their patience and encourage them to plan ahead, allow extra time for their journey and check the Traffic Scotland website and Twitter account for live travel information.”

BEAR Scotland say all relevant stakeholders have been made aware of the traffic management arrangements, and all workers will be subject to strict physical distancing rules in line with Scottish Government restrictions.
