A rush-hour car crash near to Junction 2 of the M8 outside Edinburgh has led to commuter chaos outside the capital.
The westbound carriageway had to be closed as emergency services dealt with the incident, leading to three mile-long tailbacks on one of the hottest days of the year.
The crash between two vehicles saw one end up on the barrier and one of the hard shoulder of the carriageway, near to Junction 2 at Newbridge.
At 5.35pm the emergency services including police, fire crews and ambulances arrived at the scene and closed the entire westbound M8 so that they could carry out recovery work.
A diversion has been put in place via the M9 to the Junction 1 roundabout, turning back around and up to the entry slip for M8 Junction 2.
It is not known if there are any injuries or fatalities.
Other roads into and around Edinburgh now appear affected by the buildup of traffic, including the city bypass and Queensferry Crossing.
Just after 6.30pm, reports have been received of an overturned lorry further up the road at Junction 16 of the M8 westbound.
EdinburghLIVE reported: "One lane blocked and lane blocked on exit slip road due to overturned lorry on M8 Westbound at J15 A803 Glebe Street (Townhead).
"Traffic is coping well. Lane one (of three) is blocked on the main carriageway, and lane two (of two) is blocked on the exit slip where the lorry has overturned."
