M8 pothole damages large number of cars as police shut route near Edinburgh

As many as 17 cars have been damaged after crashing into a 'massive pothole' on the M8 this morning.

Police have closed the eastbound motorway near Bathgate as officers deal with the incident.

Traffic is currently being diverted off the road via the exit and entry slips at Junction 3A. According to Traffic Scotland there are queues all the way back to Junction 4.

The pot hole is in lane two of the motorway with vehicles said to be swerving out the way to avoid it this morning.

According to Joanna Cochrane of Forth One there were around 17 vehicles on the hard shoulder as a result.

She tweeted: "M8 e/b Bathgate to 3 Livingston... Massive pothole outside lane. Several vehicles (around 17!) now on the hard shoulder - take extreme care!"

Traffic Scotland reported shortly before quarter to nine: "M8 hazard. There is a pot hole in lane 2 (of 2) at J3a.

"Police now on scene diverting traffic via the exit and entry slips at J3a. Traffic is tailing back to J4.

"Teams en route for the pothole."

Traffic system Inrix is reporting that emergency repairs are now underway, with several vehicles still in the hard shoulder.
