M8 motorway in Glasgow to close for 12 hours as bridge set to be demolished

Part of Scotland’s busiest motorway is set to close for 12 hours as work crews demolish a footbridge in Glasgow.

A section of the M8 will be shut off on Saturday, August 1 between 10pm and 10am the following morning.

The footbridge, which connects Baird Street to the Sighthill area, is set to be replaced by a new crossing which should be in place by the end of 2021.

A 1000-tonne crane will be placed on the motorway during the closure and will be used to remove the pedestrian footbridge in two sections.

HGV’s, which will also be parked on the road, will be used to take the concrete and debris away.

The westbound carriageway will be completely closed at Junction 15 Stirling Road off slip (Royal Infirmary).

And the eastbound carriageway will shut between Junction 15 and Junction 18 including all slip roads in between.

Local diversions will be in place for the duration of the works.

Councillor Susan Aitken, leader of Glasgow City Council and Chair of the Glasgow City Region Cabinet, said: “This section of the M8 is one of the busiest routes on the city’s road network, so this work has been meticulously planned to keep the impact on traffic to an absolute minimum.

“The demolition is the first step in a fantastic project to deliver a stunning new pedestrian and cycle route over the M8, connecting Sighthill and neighbouring communities to the city centre.

“We hope that regular travelers on this route will enjoy seeing the improvements emerging as the works are continued.”

Further road closures to complete the construction of the new crossing are planned in the summer of 2021.

Further details will be made available closer to the time.
