M8 lorry smash leaves one man in hospital after smash sparked traffic chaos

A man has been hospitalised after a horror lorry smash on the M8 near Shotts.

A large section of Scotland’s busiest motorway was shut off as emergency services scrambled to the scene this morning.

Police closed parts of the road as ambulance crews rushed a man to Wishaw General Hospital for treatment. He was later transferred to Hairmyres Hospital. His condition is not yet known.

It comes after a lorry and a truck crashed at Junction 6A Chapelhall at around 7.45am sparking the traffic chaos.

A crushed traffic management truck was pictured after smashing into the back of an HGV - with the front end and windscreen completely destroyed.

Sergeant Andrew Currie said: "I would ask any driver using the M8 in the early hours of this morning who may have witnessed the incident, or who may have dash cam footage, to please contact police."

Anyone with information is asked to contact officers on 101 quoting reference number 0535 of 2 October, 2020.

The crash came just a few hours after another horror smash on the M8 left a driver dead.

Emergency services raced to the scene between  Shotts  and Whitburn after reports of a crash on the westbound carriageway at around 4.05am. 


Police Scotland later confirmed that one person had tragically lost their life.

Chief Inspector Darren Faulds, said: "Our thoughts and sympathies are with the family and friends of the person who sadly lost their life in this incident."
