M8 is closed in both directions after serious accident in early hours of morning

The M8 is currently closed in both directions following a serious accident, which took place in the early hours of this morning.

The motorway is shut near Harthill, between Junction 4a at Harthill and Junction 5, following a collision.

Emergency services raced to the scene at around 5am this morning, with the road likely to remain closed for some time while police deal with the incident.

Diversions are in place but commuters travelling between Edinburgh and Glasgow are facing a long wait this morning due the ongoing incident.

Drivers have been warned of major disruption and are still being urged to find alternative routes to avoid the M8.

In the latest update, Edinburgh-bound commuters face a wait of over 95 minutes, while those heading to Glasgow can add approximately  an hour to their journeys.

Traffic Scotland said: "M8 is closed in both directions due to a serious RTC W/B is closed at J4a E/B is closed at J6 Emergency services are on scene.

"The road is likely to remain closed for some time."
