M8 incident: Person dead after being struck by vehicle on motorway

A person has died after being struck by a vehicle on the M8 motorway.

The incident happened on the M8 eastbound near Whitburn around 12:20am this morning.

Police were called to the scene to reports that a person had been struck by a car and were joined by emergency services.

Unfortunately, the person was pronounced dead at the scene.

The motorway was closed for over seven hours as a result of the incident, and has only just reopened again to traffic heading in the direction of Edinburgh.

Police enquiries remain ongoing into the crash.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: "At around 12.20am on Friday, 18 June, 2021, police were called to a report of a person having been struck by a vehicle on the M8 eastbound near Whitburn.

"Emergency services attended and the person was pronounced dead at the scene.

"The road was closed until around 7.25am and has now re-opened. Enquiries remain ongoing into the crash."
