M8 crash: Police release man arrested after fatal motorway smash that killed three people

A man who was arrested in connection with a fatal crash on the M8 motorway that killed three and injured five has been released, Police Scotland confirmed.

The incident happened at 5.05am on Sunday, 19 September, when a blue Audi Q7 left the road on the M8 westbound near to junction 31.

Manveer Benning, 27, David Paton, 27, and Mark Downie, 31, were pronounced dead at the scene of the smash, while five other men were taken to hospital for treatment of serious but non-life threatening injuries.

The evening following the crash, officers advised that a 35-year-old man had been arrested in connection with road traffic offences.

However, police have today confirmed that he has been released.

Enquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident remain ongoing, and anyone with any information is asked to contact police on 101 quoting incident number 0860 of 19/09/21.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: "A 35-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident.

"He has since been released and enquiries are ongoing."
