M8 crash: Drivers face commuter hell stuck in tailbacks for over three hours

Drivers have spoke of commuter hell after a crash on the M8 has brought traffic to a standstill.

Emergency services rushed to the collision, between Junction 4a and Junction 5, at around 5am this morning.

Commuters were warned diversions were in place on Scotland's busiest motorway, which connects Edinburgh and Glasgow, and were urged to take a different route or the train.

Traffic Scotland earlier estimated delays of over 90 minutes Edinburgh-bound and around an hour heading westbound.

However, the incident is still ongoing with police at the scene, and drivers have revealed the tailbacks are even worse than expected.

One said: "How does the estimate delay time work? I have moved one mile in the last 3 hours. Queuing from Junction 6 since 7am."

"Been stuck for 3.5 hours since 6.10 just after I came on at Newhouse", said another.

One driver added: "2.5 hours I’ve been in it so far and still 1.5 miles away from Shotts junction."

A motorists stuck in the tailbacks suggested the incident "must be bad", writing: "A cordon just drove past down the hard shoulder."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Officers are currently in attendance on the M8 near to junction 5 at Shotts following a road traffic incident. Police were called to the scene at 4.05am on Friday, 2 October.

"The road is currently closed in both directions between junction 4 and junction 5.

"Emergency services remain at the scene and drivers are asked to avoid the area, where possible."
