M8 incident: Man dies after being hit by vehicles on motorway near East Whitburn junction

A man has died after an incident on the M8 in West Lothian early this morning.

Police say the pedestrian was hit by a number of vehicles on the eastbound carriageway of the motorway. They add enquiries are ongoing in to establish the full circumstances.

The motorway was shut at around 2.45am on Friday with officers called to the scene. People were urged to avoid the area and use an alternative route if they need to travel.

The stretch of road affected was between junctions 3A and 4, near Whitburn and Bathgate.

Traffic Scotland first reported news of the incident on social media at around 6am. They issued an update at 9.40am to say the route remained closed, and "will remain closed for some time".

They confirmed shortly after 11am – five hours after it was first closed – that the route had reopened to traffic.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: "Around 2.45am on Friday, 1 January, 2021, a male pedestrian died after being struck by a number of vehicles on the eastbound carriageway of the M8 near to junction 4 at East Whitburn.

“The road is closed westbound between junction 3a and junction 4. Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of the incident.”
