M74 traffic chaos as motorway closed after 'horrific' two car crash

Traffic has been brought to a standstill on a busy Scots motorway after a "horrific" crash this afternoon.

Police raced to the M74 motorway at around 1:30pm amid reports of a major crash.

The key route has been closed in both directions for a number of hours following the incident.

Traffic Scotland warned motorists of a "serious road traffic incident" on the motorway at around 2pm this afternoon, June, 7.

It's understood the two-vehicle smash has taken place near junction 11, according to police.

Drivers in and out of Glasgow heading on the M74 have been urged to find an alternative route, with long delays to journey times.

In a statement, Traffic Scotland update said: "The M74 J9 are closed 9 (all lines) in both directions due to road traffic incident. Road users are advised to use alternative route and expect longer than normal journey times."

In a later update, Traffic Scotland added that the motorway was clear but the M74 remains closed in both directions.

Emergency services remain at the scene this afternoon, with no details on casualties at this time.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Police were called around 1.30pm on Monday, 7 June, 2021 following the report of a two vehicle road crash on the M74 southbound near junction 11.

"Emergency services are in attendance and there are no details on injuries at this time.

"The Southbound carriageway is currently closed."

One motorist said: "Just went past it going towards Glasgow and it looks horrific. Miles of traffic, not sure if it looks set to open any time soon."

Another added: "Been with a baby and toddler in the queue for an hour now..."
