M74 traffic chaos as lorry catches fire on motorway

A lorry caught fire on the M74 sparking an emergency response.

The blaze ripped through the vehicle at around 9.30am this morning near Lockerbie.

Pictures show black smoke billowing from the scene after the truck was pulled onto the hard shoulder.

The road was partially closed off to drivers as firefighters tackled the flames.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown.

No one is believed to have been injured.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "We were alerted at 9.27am on Monday, June 29 to reports of a lorry on fire on the M74, near Lockerbie."

"Operations Control mobilised three appliances to the scene, where firefighters extinguished the fire and worked to make the area safe

"Crews thereafter left the scene.

"There were no casualties."

Traffic Scotland said: "On Monday, 29th June, at 09:43:32 on the A74(M) J16 Johnstonebridge - J17 Lockerbie North lanes 1 and 2 (of 3) southbound, are currently restricted due to a vehicle fire.

"Drivers are advised to use caution on approach."

Police Scotland have been contacted for comment.
