M74 motorway crash: One man taken to hospital as incident causes traffic chaos in both directions

One man has been taken to hospital following what is believed to have been a two car crash on the M74 motorway this afternoon.

The motorway was closed in both directions from around 2pm this afternoon as a result of the collision, which took place between Junction 8 (Canderside) and Junction 9 (Draffan), around 20 miles to the south east of Glasgow by Larkhall.

Drivers in and out of Glasgow were warned to to use an alternative route and expect delays to their journey, with a diversion in place for road users via the B7078 at Kirkmuirhill.

The northbound carriageway has since reopened, although the southbound carriageway remains closed between Junctions 9 and Junction 10 (Wellburn Interchange).

Police Scotland have confirmed that the motorway has partially reopened and that one man has been taken to hospital.

His present condition is unknown.

Meanwhile Traffic Scotland have reported that cars are at a stand on approach and also heavy on alternative routes through Kirkmuirhill, with cars queuing for J9 offslip and delays of approximately 40 minutes at present.

UPDATE - The road has now fully re-opened but delays remain throughout the area.
