M74 motorist arrested after being caught nearly four times over the drink-drive limit

Police have arrested a driver on the M74 after finding that they were nearly four times over the legal drink driving limit.

Police Scotland spotted the vehicle speeding and driving erratically on the M74 south of Raith last night (November 6), according to a tweet from the force.

Officers pulled the driver over and administered a breathalyser test. The test registered a blood alcohol content level of 85 mcg - almost four times the legal limit of 22mcg.

Police shared an image of the speed gun reading of 98mph.

The driver was subsequently arrested, police confirmed.

In a tweet sent at 11:27 on Saturday (November 6), Road Policing Scotland wrote:

" #LanarkshireRP spotted this car speeding and driving erratically on the #M74 south at the Raith earlier.

"The cause of their driving behaviour was because they were drunk. Reading of 85 (Limit 22). Arrested / reported."

In Scotland, drink-driving is a criminal offence punishable with up to six months in prison. Even if it's a first offence, drivers can expect to face a minimum 12-month driving ban, a criminal record, a hefty fine and potential loss of their vehicle.

According to Road Safety Scotland, motorists are six times more likely to die in a road accident when driving over the limit.
