An air ambulance was scrambled this afternoon to rush a man to hospital for emergency treatment following a serious crash between a van and a lorry on the M74 motorway south of Glasgow.
Police and emergency services were called to the scene on the M74 southbound near Junction 11 (Happendon Interchange), around 20 miles or so to the south east of Glasgow by Lesmahagow after the alarm was raised around 1:30pm this afternoon.
The 35-year-old man was taken to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital with what appear to be serious injuries.
The crash forced the closure of the motorway for around four hours to allow both vehicles to be removed, leading to traffic chaos in the area.
Drivers in and out of Glasgow were warned to to use an alternative route and expect delays to their journey, with a diversion in place for road users via the B7078 at Kirkmuirhill.
The motorway has since reopened fully in both directions.
Police have confirmed that enquiries into the incident remain ongoing.
A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: "Officers were called around 1.30pm on Monday, 7 June, following reports of a two vehicle crash, involving a van and lorry, on the M74 southbound, near junction 11.

"Emergency services attended, and a 35-year-old man was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow by air ambulance with what appeared to be serious injuries.
"The road was closed for around four hours to allow the vehicles to be removed and enquiries into the incident remain ongoing."
