M74 car fire causes rush hour traffic chaos in Glasgow

Emergency services have been at the scene of a car fire on a major motorway during Monday evening's rush hour.

Two engines were sent to tackle the vehicle inferno at around 4.40pm on the hard shoulder of the Glasgow M74 southbound between junction one and 2A.

Firefighters spent around half an hour extinguishing the blaze before being called back to base.

A dramatic picture from the scene shows the engines in attendance as traffic edges past.

It is unclear at this time how the car caught fire.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said: "We attended a vehicle fire on the M74 after being called to the incident at 4.40pm.

"There was one private car on fire on the hard shoulder.

"Two appliances attended and extinguished the fire.

"The stop message came back at 5.12pm."

Traffic Scotland have warned motorists to expect delays.

The body tweeted: "#M74 vehicle fire

"Slow traffic on the M74 southbound J1 to J2A due to a vehicle fire in the hard shoulder- lane 1 of 2 now closed.

"Please #TakeCare. Emergency services are on scene."
