Commuters are facing delays to their journey home after a vehicle caught fire on the M62 .
Traffic has been stopped eastbound between J22 Denshaw and J23 Outlane as a result of the blaze in lane two.
Pictures show smoke blowing across the carriageway.
Highways England say they are releasing traffic near to the scene of the fire, which is said to have caused damage to the road surface.
Twitter users have described the scene as right next to Stott Hall Farm, the house in the middle of the motorway .
In a statement Highways England said: "We are currently working on releasing the trapped traffic passed the scene.
"The car is in lane two and it has caused damage to the road surface.
"Please remain with your vehicle and await instruction. All traffic is being sent off at J22 #Denshaw. Diversion is in place."
