M62 crash: Drunk man who caused two deaths driving wrong way jailed for nine years

A man who drove up a slip road in the wrong direction has been jailed for nine years and four months after killing two in a horror crash.

Taryl Moxam, 23, was charged last month with causing the deaths of father-of-two Adam Afsar, 34, and 27-year-old Jason Wilby by dangerous driving.

It was reported at the time of the fatal crash last April, the victims had been in a Skoda Octavia which had been hit by an Vauxhall Insignia on junction 26 of the M62.

It was heard Moxam, from Barlborough in Derbyshire, was driving up the slip road in the wrong direction before the fatal crash occurred.

He was twice over the limit for both drink and drugs, failing two tests.

He pleaded guilty earlier this week at Bradford Crown Court.

Moxam suffered a broken wrist in the crash.

Mr Afsar was described as a devoted father-of-two who died alongside former security officer Mr Wilby.

Mr Afsar was on his first shift for a delivery firm and Mr Wilby was accompanying him as it was late at night when the tragedy occurred.

Moxam had been out drinking with friends in Leeds on the night of the crash.

After an argument at his hotel, he left and drove his car away.

Moxam drove for around half an hour, 18 miles, out of Leeds, heading to Chain Bar on the A58.

He went up the westbound exit slip road in the wrong direction before travelling 650m and crashing into the Octavia being driven by Mr Afsar.

He twice failed a drink and drugs test and was twice over the legal limit for cannabis and alcohol.

Judge David Hatton QC said he had "no hesitation in imposing the maximum sentence" for causing death by dangerous driving of 14 years, which was reduced to nine years four months due to Moxam pleading guilty at the earliest opportunity.

Detective Sergeant Carl Quinn, of the Major Collision Enquiry Team, said: “This was a tragic incident in which two men lost their lives.

"The deaths of Mr Afsar and Mr Wilby were completely preventable. Moxam‘s actions that day were nothing less than absurd, his senseless decision to get behind the wheel and drive resulted in utter devastation for the families of these two young men, tragically cutting their lives short.

“No sentence will ever be enough for their families, however I hope the result of today’s hearing offers some comfort to Adam and Jason’s loved ones.

"This upsetting case highlights the dreadful consequences that driving whilst under the influence of drink or drugs can have.”
