M62 closed as driver flees smoking car that burst into flames

A motorway was closed after a car burst into flames this morning.

Dramatic pictures released by the Highways Agency show the flames tearing through the car on the M62 at Birchwood.

The driver was able to safely flee his car moments before the fire, Highways England confirmed.

At one point a full closure was put in place westbound as emergency services dealt with the incident.

Initially at around 10.30am two lanes were closed as police and firefighters were called to the scene between J11 A574 Birchwood Way and Junction 10 for the M6 Croft Interchange.

One lane was then reopened at 10.45am.

However at 11.25am Highways England confirmed all traffic was being held.

However the closures were fully lifted by 11.30am.

Highways England said nobody was injured and tweeted: "Driver stopped on the nearside and got out, we were not far behind them and saw it (the car) just starting to smoke so called Cheshire Fire.

"They arrived just as it started to catch fire."
