M62 closed after 'high speed police chase' ends in serious crash

The M62 is closed in both directions in Yorkshire after a serious collision which appears to have involved a police car.

The motorway has been shut for several hours between junction 34 (Selby) and junction 35, which merges into the M18, and according to unconfirmed reports the collision happened during a high-speed pursuit.

Photographs show police officers, paramedics and firefighters on the scene and a diversion in place, but drivers are being urged to avoid the area.

In a statement, Highways England said: “Emergency services including West Yorkshire Police are in attendance. Highways England traffic officers have also been deployed to assist.

“Due to the seriousness of the incident the closure is expected to remain in place for several hours.

“Traffic trapped within the closure on the eastbound carriageway has all been released.

“We are in the process of turning traffic from the back of the queue on the westbound carriageway. Please be patient and await instructions from traffic officers or the police.”

Humberside Police and Yorkshire Ambulance Service have been approached for a comment.
