M62 car fire leads to delays and lane closures

Emergency crews rushed to the M62 earlier this afternoon following a car fire.

Two lanes were closed eastbound near junction 21 at around 1.30pm today (Sunday).

Highways England tweeted a photo of the vehicle on fire and smoke billowing into the sky.

They told drivers to avoid the area.

All lanes have since been reopened.

At 1.38pm, Highways England posted: "Two lanes are now closed on the M62 eastbound between Junction 21 for Milnrow and junction 22 for Rocking Stones due to a vehicle fire near Rakewood Viaduct.

"Traffic Officers and Manchester Fire are on scene.

"Delays are expected."

North West Motorway Police also tweeted about the blaze.

The force said: "We have an incident on M62 eastbound J21 and J22 just after Rakewood viaduct.

"Highways England and county fire are at the scene dealing."

Highways England did not have reports of any injuries in the blaze, a spokesman said.
