One lane on the M61 heading northbound is closed after a multi-vehicle crash.
The motorway lane is closed between junction two for the East Lancashire Road and junction 4 for the A6, Atherton and Farnworth.
Traffic police officers and ambulances are on the way to the scene, Highways England has confirmed.
The crash is causing congestion to the M60 clockwise at junction 14 for East Lancashire Road.
Drivers are being urged to proceed with caution as delays are building in the area.
The closure spanned two lanes for a short period and traffic was briefly stopped at around 6.35pm to clean a spillage and to reopen the second lane.
In a tweet at 6.11pm, Highways England said: "The #M61 northbound #J3 (#Kearsley,#Bolton, #A666) to #J4 (#Atherton, #Leigh, #A6) 1 lane has been closed due to a collision.
"Traffic Officers Recovery & @NWAmbulance are on their way to the area."
