Traffic is queuing on the M61 northbound, following a crash near Rivington Services.
The outside lane has been closed between the services and junction 8 (Chorley) since around 6.50am.
Traffic was completely held between 6.50am and 6.55am. Traffic officers are currently at the scene.
Highways England tweeted: "The M61 northbound Bolton West/Rivington Services) to J8 Chorley A674/A6. 1 lane has been closed due to a collision.
"Traffic Officers are currently at scene, recovery are on their way to the area to assist."
The incident follows another crash yesterday, just yards from this one.
Three children were among five injured when a car crashed on the northbound carriageway
None of the injuries were serious.
Earlier yesterday, a car caught fire on the slip road to the services on the southbound carriageway.
