M61 closed: These are the diversion routes for drivers stuck in traffic

The M61 motorway near Bolton has been closed after a police incident.

Police have said they are responding to concerns for a man seen on a bridge at 10.42am this morning.

The motorway is now closed in both directions between junctions three and four.

The closure has been in place since just before 11am this morning.

Here are the diversion routes in place by Highways England:

Southbound

Exit the M61 at junction 4.  Join the A6 southbound.  Then join the A5082 northbound.

Exit the A5082 and take the third exit onto the A666 southbound, to then re-join the M61 at junction 2.

Follow the solid black circle diversion symbol.

Northbound

The same route as the southbound, but in reverse.  Follow the solid black square diversion symbol.

Road users are also advised to allow extra time for their journey.
