M60 shut following serious crash involving HGV which has shed metal bars onto carriageway

A section of the M60 is closed following a serious crash involving a HGV which has shed metal bars onto the carriageway.

The motorway is closed between junction six, for Rifle Road in Sale, to junction eight in Carrington.

Emergency services were called to the incident at around 1.50am on Thursday morning (June 11).

They found a vehicle had ploughed into a barrier.

Two people suffered serious injuries and have been taken to hospital.

An investigation is under way.

North West Motorway Police (NWMP) said a HGV has lost it's load of steel bars on the anticlockwise lane under the bridge at junction eight.

Clear up and recovery is underway.

Trapped vehicles were released and turned around earlier this morning.

A diversion route has been set up with drivers advised to follow the hollow black square, exit the motorway at junction six and follow the road which runs parallel to the main carriageway.

Drivers are then advised to follow the A56 through Sale onto the Carrington Spur slip road and rejoin the M60 at junction eight.

A statement from Greater Manchester Police said: "At around 1.50am on Thursday 11 June 2020, police were called to reports of a collision on the M60 between junctions seven and eight.

"Officers attended and established that a vehicle had collided with a barrier.

"Two people suffered serious injuries and have been taken to hospital.

A tweet from NWMP said: "Due to RTC, this will be an extended closure at m60 clockwise j7 main cway, exit slip j8 closed, entry slip j7 closed, link from j6 closed, please keep clear of this area, we will keep you all updated.

"HGV has lost it's load of steel bars on M60 acw now in lanes 1 and 2 under the bridge at j8."
