M60 police incident sees motorway delays of up to two hours

There are huge delays on the M60 in Greater Manchester after officers responded to a welfare incident.

Closures were in place from shortly after 7am on Tuesday and emergency services were at the scene. National Highways said the highway is now completely open after closures caused delays of more than two hours.

Greater Manchester Police said: “Following an earlier police incident, the M60 has now reopened between junctions 6 and 8.

“A man has been safely taken from the area and is now in the care of medical professionals.”

National Highways said there were delays of at least an hour in both directions, which would soon begin to clear.

The closures were in place between Junction 6 for Sale and Junction 8 for Carrington.

Greater Manchester Police were working at the scene and leading the response to the closure. They asked drivers to consider alternate routes. In a post on X, it said: “We thank people for their patience as this work is carried out.”

Greater Manchester’s Bee Network said some services in Trafford were also experiencing average delays of around 40 minutes due to the incident. “We're very sorry for the inconvenience caused,” the travel service said.

Earlier this morning, National Highways said: “Greater Manchester Police are working on scene and are currently leading the response to this closure.

“Due to the nature of the incident, we are unable to provide an estimated re-opening time. There are delays of at least 2 hours in both directions, so please plan ahead."
