'M60, junction 16': Jasper, the baby born on the motorway... and his birth certificate proves it

'M60, junction 16'

It's a pretty unusual place to enter the world.

But those are the exact words on little Jasper Taylor's birth certificate.

Pregnant Hannah Pickup and partner Matthew Taylor, from Bury, were on their way to Ingleside Birth and Community Centre back on January 19 after Hannah went into labour.

Jasper Taylor wasn't waiting around - and made an appearance before his mum and dad even got off the M60.

As they passed Clifton Interchange, Hannah realised it was time.

Jasper's birth certificate reads: "M60, junction 16, on the way to Ingleside, Oakwood Park, Salford."

Hannah said she remembers shouting 'we’re not going to make it' as Matthew zoomed along the motorway.

After two sets of contractions, Jasper appeared.

“I looked at the junction and thought we’re still 10 minutes away, and then all of a sudden he was out,” Hannah, 34, said.

“It all happened so quickly, we didn’t have time to panic.

“I was pretty concerned as I didn’t know what to do, but my natural instinct took over.

“Bizarrely, everything was quite calm.”

Hannah cuddled her son close to her chest, with the umbilical cord still attached, while Matthew, 37, 'just kept driving'.

“He started crying and breathing so I knew he was okay," veterinary nurse Hannah added.

When they arrived at the birthing unit, Irlams o' th' Height, Hannah hadn’t even had chance to check whether she had had a boy or a girl.

Nurses checked the baby over and told her she’d had a healthy boy, weighing 9lb 2oz.

Jasper is the couple's second child after his older brother Bruce, one.

Hannah and Matthew were able to take Jasper home to Ramsbottom later that night.

Hannah spent three days in labour before Bruce arrive.

His brother appeared in just half an hour.

“I was not expecting it to be that quick,” Hannah said.

“When he’s older, he’ll be known as the baby born on the M60.”

Since his dramatic birth, Jasper has been growing healthily - and is fit as a fiddle.
