M60 drivers trapped in five mile traffic queues after fire near Prestwich

Three lanes have been closed on the M60 near Prestwich following a vehicle fire.

Fire crews rushed to the scene following the incident, which happened anticlockwise at junction 18. There are significant delays for drivers.

Highways England tweeted a photo taken on the traffic camera, showing a fire engine at the scnee.

The carriageway appears to be full of smoke.

The tweet, put up at 3.40pm, said: "The M60 at Junction 18 roundabout - three lanes have been closed due to a fire.

"Traffic officers are en-route. Traffic police, motorway police and Manchester Fire are on scene."

A post on traffic website Inrix confirmed the incident was due to a 'vehicle fire'.

There is currently queueing traffic due to the lane closures, the post said.

A spokesman for the fire service said three fire engines were sent to the scene.

Highways England later posted: "Please be aware there are long delays on approach to this incident at J18 of the #M60 . Average journey times on the anti-clockwise are now half an hour longer than normal for this time of day.

"There's 5 and a half miles of congestion which is now back to J22 (near Oldham)."
