Emergency crews were scrambled to the M60 following a 10-vehicle smash on Saturday afternoon.
Nobody was seriously injured during the collision, which happened just after 12.30pm.
However there was heavy traffic and long tailbacks in the area for around an hour as motorway police worked to clear all the vehicles from the carriageway.
A North West Motorway Police spokesperson said: “We were called to reports that a vehicle had collided clockwise on the M60 near junction 22 at Chadderton.
“There were no serious injuries and three lanes have now reopened.
“Around ten vehicles were involved.”
All traffic was temporarily held while crews worked at the scene.
