M6 traffic: Motorway closed in both directions due to police incident

The M6 has been closed in both directions due to a 'police incident' with drivers being warned to expect lengthy delays.

Pictures from the scene showed how motorists were stuck in lengthy tailbacks with traffic coming to a complete standstill at Junction 31.

Highways England has warned commuters to expect current delays of up to 30 minutes but said that the road has been reopened in both directions.

Lancashire Police also confirmed that the M6 has been reopened.

Drivers have been told to use alternative routes if they are commuting through the area.

The closure was put into place around 6am on Monday amid what police termed a “concern for safety" of a man seen on a bridge.

Lancashire Police said: "The M6 is currently closed in BOTH directions between junctions 30 (Tickled Trout) and 31A (Longridge).

"Please make alternative travel plans and allow time for delays. We will update you when we can - thanks for your patience."

Earlier this weekend, the M6 was closed in both directions due to a dangerous driving incident.

A vehicle was reported to have been driving the wrong way on the northbound carriageway, leaving travellers stuck in traffic for over two hours.
