There are delays on the M6 near Wigan after a lorry overturned and caused a fuel spill.

Junction 26 for Orrell and the M6 west island link and the M6 south exit slip are expected to remain closed for several hours, according to Highways England.

Pictures show a lorry which has tipped over and crashed into a barrier, causing extensive damage to the drivers cab.

There are reports that the crash has caused fuel to leak from the lorry.

North West Motorway Police are currently on the scene and are waiting for maintenance crews to clear the carriageway.

A spokesperson for North West Motorway Police said: "We have reports of a road traffic accident on the east roundabout at junction 26, M6.

Highways England tweeted: "The M6 junction 26 at Orrell west island link to the east island and M6 south exit slip road will remain closed for several hours.

"Traffic officers and North West Motorway Police are at scene dealing with recovery and maintenance crews are attending to clean up and repair."
