M6 shut: Two HGVs, two vans and a car have been involved in a serious collision

A section of the M6 is shut following a collision involving two HGVs, two vans and a car.

The Southbound carriageway, from junction 18, for Knutsford, and junction 19, for Middlewich, has been closed since 2am this morning.

Highways England have described the collision as 'serious' and it is understood the car overturned.

It is not clear at this stage if there have been any injuries.

Investigation work is underway and traffic bosses have said the road is likely to remain closed for quite some time.

A diversion route has been set up through Middlewich and Knutsford.

Drivers are being advised to follow the solid circle diversion symbol via A556, A530, B5309, and A54 through Middlewich and Lostock Green.

A statement from Highways England said: "North West Motorway Police Group investigation is ongoing, and the road is likely to remain closed into - and potentially through - the morning peak period. Highways England Traffic Officers are on scene assisting with traffic management.

"Once investigation work has been completed, recovery work and scene clearance will be carried out, and there is glass and fuel across the carriageway which will require an extensive clear-up."
