M6 shut southbound near Preston after police car catches fire

A police car has burst into flames on the M6 causing a part of the carriageway to be closed.

Police shut the motorway southbound between junction 32 at Broughton Interchange and junction 33 at  Lancaster  South.

Pictures show plumes of smoke billowing out the front of the police car across the carriageway.

Lancashire Fire and Rescue along with other officers from Lancashire Police rushed to the scene just before 9.45am today (May 8).

There have been long delays in the area and diversions have been in place and drivers are being warned to avoid the area if they can.

One lane reopened around 10.50am but the other two lanes remain closed which is causing congestion up to junction 31A at Longridge.

The A6 is also struggling as traffic is using this as the diversion route.

Fire crews extinguished the blaze just before 11am.
