M6 shut as 32,000 litres of gin spills on carriageway following lorry crash

The M6 has been brought to a standstill as thousands of litres of gin spilled onto the carriageway following a collision involving two lorries.

Motorists between junctions 19 (Knutsford ) and 20 (Lymm Interchange) are currently stationary.

Both carriageways have since been brought to a halt, with a diversion currently in place, reports Cheshire Live.

In a tweet, Cheshire Police said: "The M6 is now closed in both directions between J19, Knutsford, and J20, Lymm, following a collision involving two HGVs which had resulted in the spillage of a large quantity of highly flammable liquid.

"There are currently long delays and motorists are advised to avoid the area."

An entry on travel monitoring website Inrix reads: "M6 Northbound closed, queueing traffic for 2.5 miles due to accident, two lorries involved and spillage of 32,00 litres of gin from J19 A556 (  Knutsford  ) to J20 M56 J9 (  Lymm   Interchange).

"The road has been closed since around 17:50. Diversion - via A556 and M56.

"The southbound carriageway was closed at around 18:55. The road has been closed since around 17:50. The road is now closed in both directions."

Drivers are being advised to avoid the area.
